Each
participant will experience:
- Two half-hour lessons
with Teresa Dybvig or Susan Nowicki
- Because it's a short
program, we will not have partner groups. However, all private lessons will be
open for observation. If any of the participants choose to practice together,
wonderful!
- You choose what to
work on during your lesson.
- You are invited
(urged, even) to attend as many lessons as your concentratation allows, unless
the student specifies otherwise.
- You will have all
your lessons with one teacher.
- One 1½ hour clinic on October 8, your
choice of Basic Movements or Rotation for Changing Direction (descriptions below). We introduce these concepts and
work with each participant in these skill-based clinics, showing people how to
coach one another when appropriate.
- One 1½ hour
clinic on October 9, Expressive elements in music from the 17th through
early 20th centuries (description
below)
- One 1½ hour
session on Alexander Technique
for pianists led by Ariel Weiss
- We encourage you to take
advantage of optional private sessions in Alexander Technique (30 minute
session for $45), taught by Ariel Weiss, available
on Sunday only. You can arrange your private session in advance when you
register. Payment for private sessions in Alexander Technique is due at
check-in on October 8. These sessions are in great demand. If you would like
a private Alexander session, we suggest you register early.
- One class on the rhythm
method O
Passo, led by Thomas Mullaney. If you have a
rhythmically challenging passage on a piece you're playing in the fall, here's
your chance to do some creative problem solving.
- Opening remarks; Teresa
Dybvig and Susan Nowicki share their thoughts on interpretation.
- One interpretation class
on Monday, led by Teresa Dybvig and Susan Nowicki. Please let us know at
registration if you would like to play for this.
- An hour of recreational
ensemble music on Monday morning. We'll help you find the right partners and
music!
- Mealtime discussions
about mental attitude in practice and performance.
- Our final class will be
your choice of run-throughs or coachings.
- Practice time will be
available to everyone.
- The option of
participating in a SPECIAL OUTING, dinner
at Stella Sera. This new restaurant is getting
great
reviews, and when you check out its
scrumptious
menu you won't be able to resist! Of course the company will be fantastic
too.
Clinic choices for Saturday, October
8: (Select one at
registration.)
Alignment and
Balance. This ciinic is for participants who are new to us. The two
foundations of excellent piano technique are often overlooked, even though
healthy movement cannot occur without good alignment and balance. Susan Nowicki
will articulate some guidelines for feeling and showing optimal alignment and
balance.
Rotation for changing direction.
This clinic is for returning participants. Teresa Dybvig will draw from her
experience with Dorothy Taubman's approach to piano
technique to coach you in this fundamental element, for scale crosses,
moving from the thumb, moving from 5, and other changes of
direction.
Clinic for Sunday, October 9:
Expressive elements in in music from the 17th through early
20th centuries. Teresa Dybvig and Susan Nowicki will talk about expressive
elements in keyboard music of different eras, relating elements to the
keyboards the composers played. If you would like to try some of your music on
a harpsichord, fortepiano, or even explore expressive possibilities of a
Steinway, this is your chance!
The Schedule Check-in begins at 8:30 am on Saturday,
October 8. The program will open at 9 am with some thoughts on interpretation.
Then our O Passo class will get us listening and moving to a beat in our
bodies. Clinics and private lessons will follow. We will work Saturday and
Sunday from 9 am to 6:30 pm, and Monday from 9 am to 1 pm.

Students
say
"Susan
Nowicki is a superb musician and teacher. I worked with her retraining at
the piano for about two years and found that her knowledge of the principals of
the Taubman technique is deep and her ability to translate these principals
into practical, technical movements at the piano remarkable. She combines an
organized, patient approach to learning these complex yet essential movements
with a deep sense of the music being addressed and the practical experiences of
a seasoned performing artist. Susan was the essential hand which brought me
through new stages of control at the piano, when uncertainty, and fear
threatened to stagnate my developing new skills. I recommend her as a teacher
without reservation." Adrienne Sirken,
Pianist and Educator
"I gained a
tremendous amount of kinesthetic awareness of my body in its orientation to the
piano from my studies with Ariel Weiss. Her keen and specific direction
and focused determination to help me do what I love doing the most has helped
me play with more facility and unhampered energy. It was a great honor to work
with her, and I have the highest praise for the artistry with which she does
her essentially life-changing work."
Amy Yang Pianist, graduate student at The Yale School of Music,
graduates of The Curtis Institute of Music and The Juilliard School
"Before
studying with Teresa Dybvig, I had studied with several prominent
teachers of the Taubman Technique for nine years. Although I made some
progress, it was not until I started studying with Terry that my technique
finally came together... Terry helped me regain my proper posture and hand
shape... Terry not only was able to balance my body; her focus is always on
musical expression. She has a unique gift of balancing the teaching of
technical skills with the expression of music. I am finally beginning to be
where I want to be in my piano playing. I am convinced that this is due to
Terry's high quality teaching."
